A 0-to-1 Identity for the NDC's Southern Regional Placemaking Center
Howdy Creative designed the identity for the National Development Council's Southern Regional Placemaking Center, run by National Sun Yat-sen University, translating the university's mountain-and-sea spirit into a brand image that balances credibility with an innovative edge.

Challenge
The Southern Regional Placemaking Center, run by National Sun Yat-sen University, needed a clear, professional brand image from day one that could carry its core mission. The design had to borrow the university's academic credibility while also projecting placemaking's innovative, approachable spirit, connecting government, academia, and local communities in one identity.
Goal
The client wanted a highly recognizable, credible, forward-looking identity built around a strong logo, one that could translate NSYSU's mountain-and-sea spirit into concrete momentum for driving placemaking across southern Taiwan.

Approach
- Proposed Direction A, "Heritage and Fusion," combining the structure of the "中山" (Zhongshan) characters from the university crest with mountain and sea symbols in a superellipse form for a forward-looking feel.
- Proposed Direction B, "Dynamic Interpretation," using lively, organic lines that read as a mountain from straight on and as the sea from the side, a multi-layered visual.
- Built a supporting color palette rooted in NSYSU's school motto, so every detail of the new identity ties back to the brand's core values.

Outcome
Two identity directions for the Southern Regional Placemaking Center were completed, giving the center a brand image from its earliest days that carries both academic credibility and placemaking energy, ready for the client to evaluate and select as the visual foundation for its outreach going forward.
Questions people ask
about projects like this.
How does a government agency's identity design differ from a corporate brand's?
It has to balance credibility with approachability. Howdy Creative preserves the brand equity already held by the executing body, such as a university, and layers on new visual language that expresses the agency's new mission, rather than starting entirely from scratch.
How do placemaking-related agencies typically develop their logo direction?
Howdy Creative typically proposes two paths in parallel, one leaning toward heritage and fusion, the other toward dynamic interpretation, so the client can choose the direction that best fits the agency's positioning between credibility and forward momentum.
